Landing Page or Multi-Page Website: Which Does Your Business Need?
Contents

How a landing page differs from a multi-page website, when one page is enough, why landing pages struggle to attract search traffic, and how to combine both formats.

The choice between a landing page and a full website usually comes up in one of two situations. Either a company is preparing an ad campaign, or it is ordering its first website and wants to keep costs down. The right answer depends on how many offers you have, where your visitors will come from, and how long a client thinks before buying.

How a landing page differs from a multi-page website

A landing page is one long page built around a single offer. Visitors scroll from top to bottom and see, in order, what you offer, why it is useful, reviews, the price or terms, and a lead form. The whole page leads to one action, usually a request or a call.

On a multi-page website, every service, section and article has its own address. This group includes business card sites, corporate websites, catalogues and online stores. Visitors choose where to go and can explore the company for as long as they need.

When a landing page is enough

A single page works well when:

  • you sell one service or one product, and the client has nothing to compare;
  • visitors will come from paid ads: Google Ads, Yandex Direct, or targeted ads on Instagram and Facebook;
  • you need a page for a promotion, an event or course enrolment with a clear end date;
  • you want to test demand for a new direction before investing in a big project (we covered this approach in our article on choosing an MVP tech stack);
  • you need to launch as quickly as possible.

In advertising, a landing page is convenient because the visitor lands straight on the right offer. There is nothing to distract them: no menu, no neighbouring sections and no links to other services.

When you need a multi-page website

A full website is the better choice if:

  • you have several services or products, and people search for them with different queries;
  • you want clients from Google and Yandex without paying for every click;
  • clients take time to decide: they look at your portfolio, read about the company and compare you with competitors;
  • you plan to publish articles, case studies and news.

Clinics, developers, manufacturers and B2B companies are usually better served by a multi-page website. Their clients want to see projects, the team and documents, and on a single page all of that turns into an endless scroll.

Comparison: on a landing page three air conditioner queries lead to one page, on a multi-page website each query leads to its own page
The example from the article: three air conditioner queries on a landing page and on a multi-page website

Google and Yandex rank individual pages. One page can rank well for one main query and a handful of related ones. Suppose a landing page covers five services. For each of them, it competes with competitors' pages devoted entirely to that service, and it usually loses.

Here is an example. A company sells, installs and repairs air conditioners. People search for "buy air conditioner", "air conditioner installation Tashkent" and "air conditioner repair" separately, and for each query the search engine shows a page that answers it in detail. On a multi-page site, each service has its own page with its own title, description and copy. On a landing page, all three topics share one heading and one block of text.

There are other limits too. A landing page has no internal links between pages, and there is nowhere to add articles that bring in informational traffic. If you are counting on search, start with a multi-page structure.

Can you combine both?

Yes, and many companies do. The main website attracts search traffic and tells people about the company, while each ad campaign gets its own landing page. It is convenient to host these pages on the same domain, for example in a /promo/ section. You then do not need to buy separate domains, and all your analytics stay in one place.

If your budget only covers a landing page for now, start with one, but plan the structure of the future site in advance. Later, the landing page becomes the home page or the page for your main service, and its address stays the same. If the address does have to change, set up redirects, or the site will lose the rankings it has built up. We explained how to do this in our article on website redesign.

How to choose: four questions

  1. How many services or products do clients search for separately? If one, a landing page will do. If several, you need a website.
  2. Where will visitors come from? For ads, a landing page is enough; for search, you need separate pages.
  3. How long does a client think before buying? A quick decision on a promotion suits a landing page well. Someone who spends weeks comparing contractors needs more information than one page can hold.
  4. Will you publish articles, case studies and news? If so, you need a multi-page site with a blog.

Sometimes the answers point in different directions: you have several services but only advertise for now. In that case, companies usually build a site with a separate page for each service. Any of those pages can then serve as a landing page for ads.

Frequently asked questions

How is a landing page different from a business card website?

A landing page sells one offer on one page. A business card site has a few short pages and describes the company as a whole: your services, who you are and how to get in touch. Read more in "Business Card Website in Tashkent: Scope, Timeline and Cost Factors".

How much does a landing page cost?

As with any website, we price it after a short brief. The cost depends on the number of blocks, design complexity, the number of languages and integrations, for example with a CRM or Telegram. All the factors are covered in "How Much Does Website Development Cost and What Does the Price Depend On?".

Can I build a landing page with a website builder?

For a quick test of an idea, a builder is enough. Custom development makes sense when load speed, a distinctive design, integration with your systems or future growth of the site matter. We discussed where no-code platforms are sufficient in our article on automation and AI in web development.

Will a landing page bring more leads than a website?

For paid ads promoting a single offer, often yes, because nothing distracts the visitor. From search, though, a multi-page site will bring more people. So your total number of leads depends on which channel you rely on.
